Platz talked about his mindset before starting a workout in the gym. He says he’d go into the gym with a mental weight and rep count in mind to prepare his head for such crazy lifts.

“I can never leave the gym a loser. I would have in my mind, I’m going to do this many reps with this much weight.”

He would divide the reps into smaller amounts if he wanted to perform a lot of them in a given set.

“When I did 405 for 50, I could never imagine it. It was too many reps to think about. I can’t manage that but I can manage five at a time.”Tom says.

Then, every five sets, Platz would have his trainer shout out the number of squats performed. He may then divide it up into ten sets of five repetitions.

“I would do five reps and Tony would say ‘five, ten, 15, 20’ and then he’d say 25. Well, I’m halfway done. I can get 50. They would do this for me but I could manage five reps at a time. I couldn’t manage 50. In my mind, it’s like doing sets of five, 10 times.”

Tom was also known to squat for 10 minutes straight with 225lbs. That was his style, which is why he built such enormous and striated quads. Platz relied heavily on high-volume training. Leg curls and leg extensions were performed in 60 rep increments, resulting in enormous muscle pumps.

He also talked about volume training, saying that you do not need to use large weights because lesser loads can result in fewer injuries and same muscle growth.
